Welding Neck Flange

For the purpose of measuring the flow rate of either liquids or gases in the corresponding pipeline, orifice flanges are used with orifice metres. The orifice flange has pairs of pressure "Tappings" machined onto it, typically on two sides and directly across from one another. This eliminates the need for additional orifice carriers or pipe wall tappings. RTJ (Ring Type Joint) facings or Raised Faces are the two most common options for orifice flanges. They are identical to weld neck and slip on flanges with additional machining, for all intents and purposes.

A set of orifice flanges with an orifice plate affixed and a jack screw machined are shown in the image to the right. This jack screw makes it easier to separate the flanges so that the orifice plate and gaskets may be inspected or replaced. Orifice flanges come in all popular flange materials and conventional sizes and ranges. Flanges can be purchased in three different configurations: threaded, slip-on, and welding neck. Each flange is normally delivered with two 1/2" NPT tappings. As with ASME B16.5, ASME B16.36 addresses the dimensions and dimensional tolerances of orifice flanges with orifice pressure differential connections.
